Not only does it add a ridiculous amount of variety vastly unique factions and religions, but it cleans up a lot of annoying issues with base Civ 4.
Remember how the late game just settled into peaceful stagnant teching? The countdown to armageddon now forces a lot of sides into war.
Remember how the best strategy in war was just having one giant slow moving stack slog its way through enemy territory? Not anymore. The amount of collateral damage stuff has skyrocketed. Some spells can immobilize entire stacks. Assassin units target the weakest unit in a stack. You now want to send out screening forces and spread out.
Remember how forests gave a ridiculous +50% defensive bonus making it impossible to attack most places? Now it's only +25%.
Remember how forts were never worth it? Now they upgrade to 3 levels like cottages to give better bonuses, and give bonuses to units up to 2 spaces away. This is coupled with the new mountain map creating several key chokepoints.
Remember how cavalry sucked? They could only move 2 which meant nothing since most of the terrain was either forest or hills, and always got slaughtered by spearmen anyway. Now they can move 3 and their combat strength has been lowered a little in exchange for removing units with huge anit-cavalry bonuses.
Remember how units just moved too fucking slow in general? Now the +1 movement promotion is easier to get, and some leaders get a "raiders" trait that has all units start off with the commando promotion (get movement benefits from enemy roads) in addition to giving pillaging bonuses so that now it's actually worth doing and having fun with.
Remember how you were screwed if you had a huge neighbor? You couldn't take him on in war and you couldn't outproduce him. Now there are a bunch of "hidden nationality" units that appear as barbarians but are actually controlled by you. Send them into enemy territory to fuck shit up at no accountability to you.
There are only a couple downsides. The AI is pretty bad dealing with all the new features, so just bump the difficulty up a level or two from what you're normally used to. It also seems to take longer to calculate turns, with turns 300+ sometimes taking up to 15-20 seconds. I usually like playing on epic or marathons speeds but this kind of kills that. |
