No I get that the catchphrases are hell of catchy and that the characters are adorably quirky and that awesome shit happens. On paper it sounds great. But it's like The Gap of webcomics: tasteful, safe, writ in neutral tones. It makes correct references and has its art hat admirably tipped at exactly the right graphic design degree, and then mingles in just enough sadness at life's fleeting measure that we can admire the author's depth. This is all congruous to the 16-24 y.o. sad dork demographic mapped with pinpoint precision by xkcd: in ten to twelve years, those guys cool down and stop being fascinated with their own cleverness, and they start to develop an aesthetic sensibility and learn to accept failure. They're ready for Achewood then!
Neither xkcd nor Achewood do anything consciously outre (xkcd does appalling things occasionally but they are the blunders of the young, dumb, and full of undispensed cum. Think: SB.) They do not demand, their attempts at intimacy are appallingly toneless, and they never take the reader outside of his or her comfort zone. xkcd errs on the side of shallow and narcissistic, and Achewood errs on the side of wholly absorbing the status quo, no matter the degree of archness with which they do it, the way that QB absorbs religion. Sure, both are occasionally funny, but that shit is frankly boring and it stinks of giving in.
I don't wanna be that asshole at the party who is always killing people's joy in pedestrian pleasures. I'm just telling you that Achewood and xkcd are part of a continuum which can leap, effervescently, into greatness, but which is in the main bland, banal, and unwholesomely knowing.
