That's where the point system comes in. You get 500 more points for the same grade on a higher difficulty level, meaning that a veteran completion of a level is 1000pts more than a comparable amateur one. The points are useless until your first completion of the game, at which point they will take center stage over your money. That is how you unlock infinite ammo for particular weapons, as well as new characters should you choose to fork out the 5 additional dollars for the fantastic VS mode. Do not spend anything on those stupid gumball machine things unless you have a surplus and really want the achievement (I though they were crucial to unlocking something good).
The progression I would suggest is normal coop with a good friend A who may or may not be good at it -> veteran completion with people you don't know as well but are into the game -> professional with upgraded weapons with whomever is willing to do it. At this point in the game's lifecycle most strangers in professional are very good, and they often show you great stuff in the more subtle tactical options available along the way. Amateur is fine for farming and your first timed effort.
The finally stage of addiction is time-whoring, so obscure that it does not really include a reward beyond the "Getting a whole difficulty level's total time under 5 hours infinite rocket launcher" (trivial) and the stack of points you will generate along the way. At this point I have run out of coop people willing to do this, but it lasted a surprisingly long time on singleplayer through all of veteran. Professional past 5 is a tricky proposition on your own, thanks to the potential for Sheva instadeath. At least, that's my excuse for not maxing out S for that difficulty. |
