| It's about the mayor of NYC, Mitchell Hundred, who is a retired superhero that can talk to and command machines. What I like about the comic is that 90% of the focus is on his everyday duties as Mayor. It feels real - the mayor tackles problems such as snowplow drivers on strike, gay marriage, anti-terrorism efforts, and regular stuff like that. He's not patrolling rooftops by night or fighting Galactus.
The characters are MOSTLY believable and three-dimensional although there are also some flat or boring ones. Another slightly negative thing is that so far all of the story arcs tend to follow the same pattern: for three issues you'll see a masked man killing some people and you don't get any clues to their identity or motive. Then, in the fourth issue a supporting character will grab some guy out of the blue and explain to everyone how this was the killer all along and what their motives were and bladdy-blah. The killers are never that crucial to the overall storyline and this pattern repeats itself a few times in a row so it gets old. The mayor himself is interesting even though he's a Mary Sue Boy Scout that always knows the correct thing to do or say in any situation. He's intensely private and doesn't have any internal monologue (except in the flashback scenes I guess) but you still get the sense that he is a well-adjusted human being that sincerely wants to help the city as best he can. There's a grand over-arching plot dealing with the source of the mayor's superpower. He started out as a regular civil engineer when he discovered an alien-looking artifact that exploded on him and gave him his power. Throughout the issues there will be other alien-looking hints or signs in the background and it really feels like the author is building up to something. It's worth reading but not the greatest. |
