I'm way late getting to this 2002 movie, but I'm busy, so the movie had to be proactive and actually attack me. Right after shutting off a game of Resident Evil 4, there was THE SMASHING MACHINE playing on SpikeTV of all places! I had no choice but to SUBMIT to this opportunity.
It's incredible, and I'm angry I waited this long to check it out. Granted, it's made for a fight fan like myself, but everyone can get with the human drama of someone shooting up opiates and then waking up in ICU, both on camera.
I'm getting ahead of myself in all the excitement. The movie follows Mark "The Smashing Macine" Kerr and his longtime pal Mark "The Hammer" Coleman as they make the jump from ghetto UFC to the big money of Japan's PRIDE league (which I've told you people about before, so get with it already). Kerr is continuing his winning ways and Coleman is trying to mount an oldtimer comeback. That alone is an interesting subject, but then Kerr's pain killer abuse takes over, as does his alcoholic crazy girlfriend. We see Kerr at the very bottom on several occasions, all of which are easily spotted because he has a needle in his arm or is crying. Extreme Fighters don't do anything halfway. I remember seeing Mark Kerr back when his nickname was "The Specimen", and thinking he was indestructible. I guess he thought so as well. The filmmakers couldn't have asked for better material. And neither can you. |
