It's so maddening because it's basically to me what Civ2 was for you: a strategy game with glaring flaws that kill its chance at best game ever, but a bunch of great elements that make you unable to enjoy "better" games.
I just can't go back to Civ or Alpha Centauri and having to manage every individual city moving around armies one square at a time. Have everything produced at my capital! Taking territories simply gives my capital more resources! Armies move around territories on a Risk board! Leave only the fun part of city development: roads and improvements!
Extra maddening is the sequel fixing the most glaring flaws of the original while creating new ones that put it in the same situation.
Original:
+Charm
+Color
+Economy
-Overpowered amphibious landings
-AI gangup coupled with cheating
-Mobile artillery the only unit worth getting
Sequel:
+Amphibious landings fixed
+New World mechanic fixes early gangup
-Charm gone
-Muddy brown
-Economy completely broken mid to late game
-Forts are way too cheap for making your territory impossible to attack. |
