Haha, I did the same thing. The beginning of D3 really was awesome. We were also living in a world where HL2 was in a Daikatana-length development hell (and didn't appear until three months later) and where RE4 was six months off.
I played till it got repetitive, kept up with the patches, then level-warped to the "hell" level. This is the game Carmack wanted, where its plot was just as important as a porn flick. His company has the exact opposite problems Rockstar does. And it's somewhat infuriating, because he actually has interesting hobbies in rocketry and cars, which would be great to make a game around. (At least, more interesting than the hobbies of most game devs, which is WoW.)
This has been a great thread, I hope someone is hard at work digging up what we all thought about the first couple of hours of Black & White.
