Pandemic made Full Spectrum Warrior which was all about being a real soldier and dying from gut-shots and setting up lame fields of fire and in the end just leapfrogging in a straight line to your objective while shooting people from behind barrels and corners. Apparently this frustrated them because they turned right around afterwards and made the perfect Rambo-simulator, in which you are GOD in the shape of a little man running around in a huge war-torn world blowing up buildings and getting ARTILLERY SUPPORT and CLUSTER BOMBS and A-10 GUNSHIP ATTACKS as handouts from various "real life factions". The UN, for instance, give you bunker-busters and "surgical strikes" (sneer) while the Chinese give you genocidal artillery barrages and probably tactical nukes and shit, who knows. In any case you roam around warzones looking to bring in the scheming bastards in some dictators' "deck of 52" while doing odd-jobs for the russian mafia, the chinese and the UN in order to convince them that you're worthy of their battlefield intelligence and huge fat guns.
The deck is split into four suits, and you have to hunt down the lower cards in order to unlock the "ace", who gets his own level and specific mission criteria. Vehicles are everywhere; there's cars, tanks and helicopters. You hijack them and turn their firepower on whoever is attacking you at the push of a button. The hijack animations are money-shots on par with the instant kills in Tenchu: jumping onto the barrel of a tank, running along it up to the hatch and tossing a grenade in makes you feel incredibly cool. In fact, everything in this game seems to be made to make you feel like a badass 80's action hero. You annihilate entire city-blocks just because you couldn't be arsed to capture the two of clubs alive (25.000 for you alive, 15 dead? 10k doesn't buy a soft treatment, pal!). You hijack enemy choppers that fly a bit too close to the ground and toss out the occupants like you were T-1000, then fire up the miniguns. You find yourself standing in a wasteland of rubble that used to be a city five minutes ago, only to order a helicopter in to drop you a shiny new red SUV so you can make your way home in style. It's a near perfect fusion of free roaming gameplay and awesome thirdperson combat. Incredibly recommended. INCREDIBLY!!! |
