Winning space marine/Tyranid strategy: JUST FUCKING SIT THERE by FABIO 05/27/2009, 11:08pm PDT
With any RTS game with melee and ranged units, the ranged units start becoming exponentially stronger the more of them there are thanks to focus fire and kiting. This would ideally make mass Eldar fire deadly except for the fact that their ranged units still crumple to any kind of return fire.

So that leaves the FUCKING tactical space marine spam. You hit a certain point with 2-3 or more squads with missiles/plasma and there is nothing you can do anymore. Get shot to pieces in a ranged fight. Get shot to pieces trying to close the distance. Manage to get some melee units in there and their sergeant ability kicks your ass RANGED SPACE MARINE SQUADS WILL BEAT DEDICATED MELEE UNITS HAND TO HAND ALL OF THE TIME. Space Marines don't even need to go to tier 3 since tier 2 will give their tier 1 units all they need to stomp anything.

Same with Tyranids. Tier 2 makes all their cheap tier 1 units viable to overwhelm almost anything (save tac marine spam). Tech up to tier 3 if you want and watch as venom cannon carnifexes guarantee the enemy army spends every fight flat on their asses.

Eldar guardians benefit a small amount from tier 2 upgrades, but nowhere near as much. The only thing banshee upgrades do is make them more expensive when they get instantly shredded. Can you get your D-cannon supported Avatar out in time? Thrill in the late game as you realize how inferior seer council and eldrich storm are to terminators and orbital bombardment.

Then we get to why Orks get hosed: the complete lack of tier 2 upgrades for their starting units. Like banshees, giving them a nob is just more money down the toilet. As orks, your only hope is for your stikbombers to harass and take out enough enemy generators for you to tech faster, because your only chance lies in tier 3 nobz and tanks. Pray your tankbustas can delay space marines long enough for that.
