There are lots of hair braiders down Kao San Road and they're used almost exclusively by the Japanese to help further distinguish themselves from the Thais. The Japanese don't look much like Thais but if you're white and with a Thai or someone they can pretend is Thai, other Thais will 'assume' she's a prostitute and that you should be ashamed to be with her and consequently won't put up much of a fight when they try and extort money from you for being a dirty bastard. So, obviously, it's important for any Asian to look as un-Thai as possible so they can say in response, "Do I look Thai to you! I find that accusation VERY insulting" and then the Thai can bow his head and feel like a lesser creature. We disguised Reen as a Chinaman... 
Our guide controlled his elephant with a nail that he dug in the direction of whichever side of the beast's skull he wanted it to turn. We paid this asshole to take us down a river on his boat. Then an Austrian family joined and the captain said his SHITTY boat couldn't handle all the weight and someone had to get off, but because he'd already taken us, like 500m, he refused to give us our money back. We'd found the boat first and I wasn't about to walk down the riverbank like a chump when everyone else is riding a boat or a beast! So we waited and waited on the boat until he threatened to sail it overladen and frightened the Austrian daughters. They left despite his protests that it was safe (which followed his many protests that it wasn't - aimed at scaring me off). I thought I was pretty clever, but as my punishment for costing him five paying customers, he tossed me off without refund 2 minutes later.
