So have you married The Royal Tenenbaums yet? (why don't you?) by Fussbett 01/14/2005, 8:56pm PST

I'm saying that every Wes Anderson movie, EXCEPT for the Life Aquatic, I have laughed out loud. I was even primed to laugh out loud at the Life Aquatic, but instead, I smiled, wryly, and thought: a failure. Pretty, with its moments, but a failure.

The story, or at least the core of it, was fine. Failed hero faces his fears and realizes that he's a hero, after all. There were related themes in his other films, except maybe Bottle Rocket. But I think he slipped over the "cartoon" meter with me and made a movie of gags, and if you're going to make a movie of gags, smiling throughout isn't the certificate of greatness you think it is.

We all react differently, and I rarely laugh at movies, so yeah, it actually IS a certificate of greatness that I found 120 minutes of Life Aquatic purely enjoyable while other movies have occasional punchlines. If laughter is the barometer, Mitch Hedberg MP3s are the funniest movie of 2004. This is why your empirical "well I laughed" is valuable only to you, and why I had a beef with it as a movie debate style. Also, "I" is the bulk of your argument. I had high expectations. I was disappointed. I didn't laugh as much as with previous Wes Anderson movies. I can extract what you think are flaws in the movie by reading your reactions to the screen (Needs to be funnier, more like Rushmore), but you make me do the extra work.

I guess we're disagreeing on the success of the story tweaking some latent emotion, which is just so happened to do with you and Ray. It didn't for me, but then, I don't like Jacques Tati movies either.

Good counter-point. I was just about to bring up the oeuvre of Jacques Tati.

And thanks for boiling down what I wrote about the weaknesses of Life Aquatic into the "Glocks vs. Calderon painting", because really that's all I actually said.

I was debating that specific point, which you proudly brought up all on your own. Don't give a 1:1 comparison example if you're going to be ashamed later.
