Payback, the director's cut (spoilers). by Creexuls, a monster >:3 05/07/2009, 6:24am PDT
It's called "Payback - Straight Up" and it's the original cut of the movie that was deemed "too dark" for release. Chad said that he was going to watch it when it shows up in Netflix so he doesn't want me ruining the changes they made.

***********************SPOILER ^______________^****************************

Major differences include Mel Gibson beating the shit out of "Mrs. Porter" in an early scene instead of just hanging around with her having flash backs while she dies of a heroin overdose. Also, they got rid of the voiceover stuff completely, and they cut some of the one liners. The biggest difference is the entire third act denuyeuueyuement THAT'S NOT HOW IT'S PRONOUNCED. I mean the whole last part of the movie. Also, Kris Kristofferson is gone. "Bronson" is now Mrs. Bronson who never appears in the movie, but is only heard over the phone. The soundtrack is gone, replaced with more menacing or somber type music instead of the high adventure criminal sleazy fun music and Jimi Hendrix. The Dean Martin song in that one scene is still in but isn't played up but played way down. It looks like some scenes are cut before they're done, and others are let run when they were cut from the original. The ending is really ambiguous, because it looks like Porter is just going to die as he's getting away with Rosie. The director's cut is a lot more bleak and weird but it's interesting. It's hard to say which I like better, especially because the "HE'S PROBABLY FUCKIN HER" scene is completely erased along with the whole plot line about kidnapping Bronson's kid and getting the outfit bosses into a shitty motel rigged with a bomb. Also when Porter shoots Gregg Henry (as himself?) in the face there's no "check my pocket" line. I didn't realize how completely useless the voice over was though until I saw this version without it. OH YEAH also the "crippled Vietnam vet" from the beginning is just a homeless guy begging for change, and instead of Mel Gibson as himself saying SHUT UP I CURED YA with a wacky one liner, he just chokes the guy out and takes his change without saying anything.

Fortunately a lot of my original favorite things are still in, like Gregg Henry karate chopping the phone every time he picks it up, and also the scene where he's in the restaurant like I FUCK YOUR MOTHER and steals some other dude's french fries, but that scene has some creepy music in it like it's possibly a scary scene where this guy might be threatening, but I find it too hard not to laugh at it, so I don't think that works as well. Clearly Mel Gibson wanted to take this whole movie over and make it in his own image as a goofy crime caper movie where he is the hero and he gets tortured but gets away at the end anyway, instead of the original that is just a movie about some scummy criminals double crossing each other, and one guy who has nothing left and takes on an entire crime organization until it eventually possibly kills him.

**************NO MORE SPOILER***********

Anyway I really don't know which version I prefer. They could've made almost two completely separate movies from these differences, if they got Mel Gibson to do the goofy fun loving sleazy version, and then get others to do the original gritty bleak version. But then the Mel Gibson one would've been the big hit anyway, and no one would've seen the bleak one.
