My laptop, which has been around for about 4.5 years, has now bitten the dust(!) due to a dead fan/heatsink. I could probably find a heatsink to replace it, but it's not really up to the task of running the apps I want to run now, so I was thinking about upgrading. A laptop that completely shreds my old one would probably only be like $700 now, right?
But here's the thing: in order for it to do what I want, I need at least 3 USB ports* and a firewire port. None of the laptops I'm seeing in any ads have firewire anymore. "1394" is also turning up nothing. There are PCMCIA devices out there that can add firewire ports but the last time I tried to use one of those it didn't work at all... granted, it was a piece of shit PCMCIA card from Best Buy.
Without the firewire port, my $600 soundcard is a doorstop. Has the world left us behind?
*One of the USB devices needs its own dedicated line, and the other devices could be part of a hub, so 2 would probably be okay? |
