Assuming there are some silent lurkers on this site who like shmups, here's some great news, Temperance Lance just released the full version of Patriot Dark off their website for free. (Note, use the link on the frontpage. The download section only has the old demo). This is big news, not only because the this is a great shmup, but the developers only released one printing and I was worried the fucked up "CD's sold at Comiket and specialty shops" distribution network used by japanese indie developers meant the full version would never see the light of day here in the states.
It's an even more heavily Cave-inspired shmup than Blue Wish Resurrection. It has a combo meter like Dodonpachi, it gives a bonus for killing enemies up close with unfocused fire, like Ketsui, and focused fire will cancel all of an enemy's bullets and turn them into bonus points once the enemy is taken out. You lose power for the laser with each enemy killed, but the blue crystals you get for using unfocused fire regenerates laser power, requiring you to juggle the two. All the bullets onscreen turn red once your laser power has run out.
The one big downside is that the music is lousy, especially the boss theme. Yet the peppy game over music is really catchy. |
