Update: Tree Style Tab sucks
It took a while to narrow the cause of my problems to this addon. I'll let addons.mozilla.org user swan explain, in his own words (found sandwiched between a bunch of 5-star reviews):
Crashs in Firefox 3 beta 3 **/***** by swan on March 4, 2008 I like this, is a great idea! But crashes all the time. When you close a mother tree firefox slow down and crash! If you undo close a mother tree Firefox crash! if you undo close a child tab firefox slow down and crash! if you undo close a normal tab somethimes dont crash. When you restore a session before crash, Firefox crash again! and again! all time you need to start a new session. If Tree Style Tab receive a tratament, this can realy improve browser surf.
Vertigo is still in stasis and so I am back to a horizontal bar of tabs. Here's the current extension list!

4chan 0.4.5.12 - open images and threads inline

Adblock Plus 1.0.1

AI Roboform Toolbar for Firefox 6.9.91 - shareware I paid for. It's pretty good.

Better YouTube 0.4.3 - forget what this does exactly.

ChatZilla 0.9.84 - IRC :(

Context Search 0.4.3

Delete Bookmark Icons 0.3 - I have a bunch of icon-only bookmarks in my toolbar and sometimes the icon cache gets fucked and must be deleted. This extension is what does that.

Download Statusbar 0.9.6.4 - Downaloads appear in statusbar.

DownThemAll! 1.1.0 - Download manager and site raper. Spammy, yet performant.

Forecastfox 0.9.8 - weather

Greasemonkey 0.8.20090123.1 - javascript injection

IE View 1.4 - View in IE if you want

InfoLister 0.10 - list plugins and addons concisely

It's All Text! 1.3 - add "edit in editor" button to textareas

Linkification 1.3.5 - total classic. Remember to disable auto-linkification (for performance)

Mouse Gestures Redox 2.0.3 - The only gestures I really use are "zoom image" and "new tab".

NoScript 1.9.0.5 - Pretty spammy but it works.

PDF Download 2.1.0.1 - Asks what you'd like done with this PDF? Somewhat spammy.

QuickRestart 1.1.4 - File | Restart Firefox. Won't need this, I hope, now that Tree Style Tab is gone.

Remove It Permanently 1.0.6.4 - "Permanently" is a best-case scenario. Even temporary removal is a websaver, though, when there's some ajaxy piece of xhtml survey interstatial shit hovering over the content you want to see.

Sage 1.4.2 - Extremely uninspired and unconfigurable RSS feed manager that nonetheless works. C+.

Searchbar Autosizer 1.4.1 - sometimes a query gets expressed (Silver Jews reference).

TabScroller 0.9.5.3 - mousewheel moves through tabs while MOUSE2 is depressed. MOUSE2-MOUSE1 = back and MOUSE1-MOUSE2 = forward. Has a bunch of other features which I turn off by selecting "basic mode". Every extension should be this good.

URL Flipper 2.1.1 - Increment numerics within URLs, and do similar manipulations. Doesn't get used much since if the generated set of URLs will be more than about 10 items, it's faster to just make a shell script.

User Agent Switcher 0.6.11 - Another classic. Gets used about once per three years.
