My list was of favorite games because I'm too casual a player to make a pronounc
; I could never seriously make any kind of statement regarding anything of all time regarding video games. BUT while we're on the topic of groundbreaking games vs. good games I have a confession to make: I didn't really like Half Life. I like Half Life 2 a little. I agree with the guy that Erik Wolpaw interviewed about Serious Sam. I don't give a shit about enemy AI and I hate exploring in FPSs. I want a game that's on rails, where the way I proceed is through nonstop shootan. I think that - much like Bitches Brew - Half Life is an innovative entry in a genre that sent all subsequent entries in that genre down a boring, shitty path. The best thing I can say about Half Life 2 is that it was pretty easy for me to see what I needed to do and it took me on rails through a bunch of interesting encounters. Max Payne was the same way, and that's why I liked it more than most FPSs. Both of them suck compared to any game where I enter a semihypnotic state due to constant activity, including River Raid. Doom, Doom 2, and Serious Sam got there, but I haven't seen any other FPSs that did. Usually I have to sit there trying to figure out what shadow to hide in so that a sentry will walk by. If I have to spend even one second of my time trying to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing in a game, that game sucks compared to Tetris. (RPGs get a pass because the goal is always the same: get more powerful.) Obviously my opinion is probably representative of a casual sometimes-gamer and lacks the nuance that you folks would have. Which is why my list is just a list of favorites.
