Re: Qix, Gran Turismo 3...

While I was a Tetris master, I didn't find it as compelling once I had beaten the entire planet at it. Qix on the other hand stayed fresh forever. I took it really personally. That helix monster scared me! And I would carefully inch across the darkness in increments so small as to be meaningless to create a tiny tiny jail for it. VICTORY. This was the most dramatic of the puzzle games.
Qix is strong, but how many levels can you go? I feel that once you get past the level of two Qix (Qixes?), aka LEVEL FOUR, the game gets pretty oppressive and unfun. Have you ever split the Qix? I think I still have not.
It IS oppressive and unfun, yet still really compelling - the earliest survival horror game, maybe? I've defeated a bunch of double qix levels via tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny buildup strategies. I die more often due to waiting than anything else. Taito's home PC version is pretty much the only one I played. Maybe it was different in the arcade? But in arcades I would usually get snared by the Columns or Klax sit-down tables and collect millions of tickets so that I could get a maximum number of My Little Pony pencils and rubber superballs.
