For a car I would guess that would happen in 1 or 2 years but that timeline is shortening rapidly. China is churning out (depending who you ask) 3 to 10 times more engineers than North America is. The copycat nature of their manufacturing forces them to be as efficient (or cut corners) as much as possible to compete against the other 1000 companies that make the exact same product. Hence, fine oak pipe the only way we can compete is to develop new technology and make money until the Chinese imitators come out next year. Rising wages in China will close the gap slightly in the future, but until a huge automaker goes bust and destroys the unions power to demand over $30 an hour for auto assembly workers wages will hold steady. I would point to automation as a possible competitive edge but what union would allow that either? Importing a couple hundred million Chinese would also help - Canada has tons of land for it.
