He started getting really big, and very shortly after releasing a 2 CD set, his <b>bro</b>ness really started coming through and he gel spiked his hair and became a myspace superstar and trademarked THE SUPERFINGER, and instead of seeming more like a joke of a frat guy he just became a frat guy, of his own frat, the DANE COOK frat. He was alleged to be nailing Jessica Simpson who would start coming to his shows and laughing way louder than anyone else. Whenever he would show up on tours with other comedians he always got the most screaming from women in the audience who didn't even like stand up and most of them didn't get anyone else's jokes, but when Dane was on there was always constant screaming. His schtick started to really wear out and really his material suffered a lot from it, maybe even because he didn't spend much time writing the new shit, but he probably believed he could do no wrong at that point, and a screaming Madison Square Garden crowd can't be wrong. It's entirely possible that he could be funny again at some point in the (probably distant) future, but a lot of his recent stuff just sucks, and seems to be more about how he relates so much to his great wonderful fans, or just about random observation shit that seems kind of half baked. The backlash came from that and a lot of other things.
