Re: There is nothing wrong with being a pogue.

And what of the 2,300 soldiers who cheered when the question was asked?
Clearly they joined the Marines for the wrong reasons (ie. reasons other than to achieve some level of real or imagined expertise when posting about the military on Caltrops).
They didn't join the Marines. They joined the Army. Anyhow, do you have some sort of inferiority complex about the military I should know about? Because I know that I don't question your qualifications to comment on, say, the game industry, or the dysfunctional internet screeching fag industry, because I know that's what you do for a living. I may disagree with your conclusions, but that's pretty different from the kind of reaction military matters seem to draw in you when I'm involved. And anybody cheers the guy sticking it to the man, especially when it deals with a persistent rumour. I would have loved to see the look on Rumsfeld's face firsthand myself. If you think the internet is a hotbed for conspiracy theories and the like, you should see what the lance corporal network is like. As an example, people who know shit all about the history of the M16 as a weapon system-despiute working with it all the damned time- will comment knowledgeably about mythical defects (as opposed to its numerous real ones) in its design, simply as a result of it being talked about enough by other ignorant people. When rumours and halftruths that people have been blabbing about forever hit the bigtime like this one did, it's like a dream come true. It can even take a hilarious qt3 turn, as happened with one clown in my command who saw Fahrenheit 911 and returned traumatized into spouting Michael Mooreish at the drop of a hat. The closed and hierarchical nature of military social conversation precludes a lot of the basic skepticism that keeps most civilians reasonably honest.
