Starcraft sucks because rushing will win EVERY. GAME.

You said so yourself in your arcade manifesto; good arcade games should always make you feel like losing was your own fault and want to make you continue.
I readily admit that War Twat is not a good arcade game and I introduced it on the High Score forum to reel people into the joke. BWR is another matter entirely.
The first one's main cause of death was the programmers not doing their job with an intuitive hit box
Yeah, that stupid hitbox located dead center of the player's sprite, highlit whenever you're in focus fire. Where on earth could it be?
and the artists not doing their job by making your own bullets stand out more than the enemies' and distract you
Your bullets are blue. The default enemy bullets are bright pink, with the option of changing them to red purple, or green. Are you colorblind? You're also missing the point. Distraction is a key component of modern shmups.
(then there's the fact that the whole thing was inching along in a quarter inch safe zone the entire time)
That's not a problem of the game, the scoring system rewards you for getting right in enemies' faces when they die for maximum points. Put another way, sitting in the corner plinking the first boss to death with pistols in DMC3 is not a case of the game being flawed, just the player being a pussy.
Where were YOU when Nananca Crash, Zuma, and Desktop Tower defense were the official high scorers of Caltrops? There's probably a good reason most of us got into those while no one cares about keeping arbitrary hit boxes boxed in a safe zone for 10 minutes.
I just didn't like those games. I'm not saying that they're irredeemably broken. I just didn't like them. Maybe your problem is that you're still approaching shmups from the mindset of ten years ago, when they died stateside. If only there was some interactive way to show you how shmups have developed over the years. Oh wait, there is!
