The answer is on a subway track all the way on the opposite end of the metropolis, with absolutely no hint that it's there. You can't just pick up the key, because it's on an electrified track. You must pick up a folding clothesline and a ducky inner tube you got by freeing it from the block of sewage outside your apartment and repaired by sticking a piece of gum over a hole. The clothesline is too long to reach the key. To bring the key within your reach you have to set a timer by removing the gum from the inner tube, placing the inner tube inside the clothesline, then place it on the track so it'll collapse and bring you the key. Now that you have your key, return to the theater and mess with the wiring. This will cause the front lights to flicker, sending the janitor inside. Now go around to the side alley. You can knock on the door then hide and the janitor will poke his head out, not see anyone, and go back in. Luckily you should have noticed a rectangle shaped shadow on the alley wall formed by a stack of garbage. If you place the fedora the detective dropped on the stack, you will now have a rectangle shaped shadow with a fedora on top. The janitor will think this is a person, but still go back inside. You must then place a wine bottle sticking out of the stack, so now you have a rectangle shadow with fedora and pointed block sticking out. The janitor will think this is a person with a gun trying to mug him, but will go back inside after getting no answer. You must now make the "mugger" talk by ripping open a toy monkey you found, removing the voice box, and sticking on the garbage pile. Your "mugger" will now say "Stop! Hands in the air! Do the monkey!" This will finally push the janitor over the edge and cause him to dance around before running away. You are now free to enter the theater where your contact inside tells you that figuring out how to get in on your own was all a test to determine if you're the one chosen to save the generic dystopian world and generic fantasy world.
