I think you're wrong about Braid.
I played the full game, and just after the demo section ends you have elements of the game world that aren't affected by your time manipulation ability. So if you rewind time at say, 8x speed, your jumpman will move quickly while these unaffected objects move at the normal rate. This allows you to pull off jumps and item manipulation tricks you couldn't do normally. An example of a puzzle using this is a sliding floor you have to extend to get across a chasm, with a puzzle piece being beneath the extended floor. You can't get the piece when the floor is retracted because of the chasm, and you can't get the piece when the floor is extended because it blocks off the piece. What you have to do is climb the ladder onto the floor, run down and flip the switch, then rewind time fast enough that you are above the floor just before it extends to its full length and blocks off the puzzle piece. I'm sure there are more intricate puzzles later on and some reviewer can describe them better than I can, but I left the game feeling that it was quite innovative. Of course, Caltrops loves to bash anything that's acclaimed and we're all PC gamers here, so anything other than "free" is too high a price to pay. (Even for me: I played it at a friend's house.)
