GTA IV cures most if not all of my gripes with how GTAIII played
- Your cousin's taxi service. Very useful, especially with the skip button. I just wish that he'd allow you to use it when you were on a mission. Also, listening to the cabbie just talk shit about you incessantly when he's not trying to act like he's FROM DA STREET while you just sit and chill in the back seat is great. - Hospitals no longer confiscate your weapons when you get admitted for your driving-related trauma, concussions, and bullet wounds that you will inevitably receive throughout gameplay. I don't know what happens if you get busted by the cops but since you ALWAYS have the option to resist arrest if they manage to catch up to you, and it makes the cops fill you full of lead, I don't see why anybody would ever choose going to jail. - Police no longer take you on multi-county car chases because you made a U-turn at a red light. In fact, they don't seem to give a shit about traffic infractions at all. Things they also don't give a shit about: You colliding with another car. You lightly tapping their cruiser. Carrying a firearm in broad daylight (as long as you don't shoot it) But god help you if you jump on their hood. - Police chases are much more escapable. No longer do you have to find your way to a Pay and Spray if you have three stars, it is entirely possible with enough road to outrun the police helicopters, and the radar even helpfully shows you where patrol cars are located in your general area. - The mission shoot-outs feel less like longer versions of the general mayhem you could cause on the street in GTA III/Vice City and more like unique encounters. A lot of them have you going inside buildings. The Use-Cover button I thought would be so incredibly obnoxious that I wouldn't use it but they seem to have pulled it off with a lot of polish and it increases your survivability in those situations lots. Also you can blind fire, how cool is that? - This game has the best drunk driving simulator I've ever played. In fact, it's the only drunk driving simulator I have ever played. - Not having an AmmoNation was kind of weird at first but once the guys hook you up with a place to buy guns everything's cool. And until then you can just run a mission for Little Jacob and he will give you about 180 rounds for your handgun each time, keeping you loaded for general free-roaming killing sprees whenever you like. - The Physics engine. Being able to hop over obstacles that you would have to just try your luck at like a Special Olympics retard in Vice City or GTA III is really great. Highway guardrails, fences, if you can reach your fingertips to it, you can climb it.
