Me: wounded by arrows of outrageous misfortune, but none of it related to my lack of education. You are an okay-looking guy, but not at all my type. Your features are too large and pronouced - labile and moist, terrible. You no doubt wear everything on your sleeve. In fact you're proud of it; you feel that bracing honesty can make up for all your other shortcomings. I will tell you a personal story; you're worth indulging on occasion. My parents raised me only so much; the majority of the work was undertaken by volunteers who, usually for unclean reasons, felt they could mold my spectacular raw material into whatever they wanted. I was angry about this once but I'm over it now. Mostly I'm grateful for the lessons I learned, but I never want to speak to any of those people again, either. The most important of all my sculptors was a European, famous in his particular area (he would later write the leading text on the subject.) I nearly ran off to live with him when I was 16! He shaped my opinions and tastes in every area and I probably would have turned out as some sort of Murasaki if I didn't have one of those contrary dispositions, where, as soon as I like something and my path towards it is clear, I have to tear the whole thing to shreds. Crazy Ivan! We were discussing ideal romances once. I, horribly jejune, announced that the most important thing in any relationship is honesty. Wouldn't you be mortified, I quizzed him, if your wife (he was married!) said she loved you and it was a lie? Wouldn't you rather have the truth?! Oh god no, he replied. That's the stupidest thing you've ever said. I hope to god she would respect me enough to lie to me. She should lie her little pants off! As long as she still sleeps with me and washes my socks, her feelings are her own business. You're orfully American sometimes. (His favorite insult, and sure to correct my attitude on any point where I may have been otherwise intractable.) He is right. Though I didn't understand why for another decade. Honesty is an insult. It should be applied only to people who don't matter, or ones you hold openly in contempt. I read almost everything you post here on Caltrops as expressions of your naked, feral, raging contempt for your audience. It is very uncomfortable, thus interesting, but combined with your utter cowardice it makes you come off as desperate. You have a lovely home (I guess, I won't know til I see the carpet - and where are the pictures of that?! Internet law!) and a nice girlfriend and rich parents - what would you have to be unhappy about, except your cowardice, which can basically be paid for in cash anyway?
