Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

My First Ten Minutes with Metal Gear Solid 3
"The Earth was blue, but there was no God". -- Snake, on the Russians sending a man into space for the first time. You'll soon know your place in the MGS3 universe when you react to this statement. Personally, I said "what?" but Snake's commander quickly interjected "Yes, well put". Snake is wearing a Raiden disguise at the beginning, and I pictured millions of fans saying "Oh no!" (and I pictured them in a giant movie theatre, which is my default mental image of "lots of fans") and then the on-screen credit displays "Snake (David Hayter)" (that parenthetical name is actually on the screen for some reason) and I pictured the fans saying "GUH?" and then he rips off his face like so much Scooby Doo villain and it's actually the old Snake and the guy typing the credits backs this up by displaying "Snake (David Hayter)" on the screen again. The cinematography and music really made this moment seem BIG, so I pictured the fans cheering and screaming and jerking off onto fellow fan faces. I thought I lasted very long, but my codec breaking point came at Snake's first meeting with The Boss, a woman who maybe was an ex-lover, but possibly just his karate teacher. They discuss the usual Metal Gear stuff; what you need to survive on the battlefield (spoiler: spirit), and Snake's various abandonment and identity issues. I slammed the X button through that segment so hard and fast, I think I set a new record in Track 'n' Field longjump. Metal Gear Solid 3 gameplay can best be summarized as "laborious", or for people who can't read, this pictogram: ...a WW2-era Japanese soldier goading you into working harder! The new camoflauge mechanic adds much in the way of stopping the action as you select camo patterns from the options menu, "intuitive" is a word the MGS team hasn't learned, and I can never see where the enemies are at thanks to the crazy limited camera. R1 to look through Snake's eyes, hold square to go into "gun view", but no buttons for "I'm crouching behind a rock and the bad guy is offscreen, thus INVISIBLE, help". Anytime I'm spotted I feel it's because I was wrestling with the controls or simple lack of information, never my fault. All the same deficiencies from MGS2, but exasperated in the flora of the jungle setting where grass obscures your view constantly, and god help you if you're behind a log. GOD HELP YOU. Once spotted, I like to run around and PRESS UP AGAINST TREES which I accomplish by getting close to a tree... Despite five different people on my team telling me to sneak, use stealth, or sneak using stealth because the world will explode if I don't use sneaky stealth, it turns out that you can just stab everyone. Hideo Kojima should bite the bullet and fully realize his MGS trend by making Metal Gear Solid 4 turn based, or better yet, a book.
