Fuck Robocop? No, I don't think so.
"Everyone I know" followed by the ultimate PSH. Here, I'll explore that second "critique" now that I'm done shaking my head at the first, using some more totally OVERRATED movies:
Yeah, No Country for Old Men was good. I liked it the first time, when it was called Blood Simple. Pan's Labyrinth was cool, but honestly I was tired of Del Toro's idea when he ran it by me as The Devil's Backbone.
And then, in a different direction:
Babel: Did we really need a bigger budget Amores Perros? Lady in the Water? Are you fucking serious? Why are they still letting this guy make movies?
The former two are examples of interesting directors who are stylistically distinct and have recurring themes, but are capable of expressing them in sufficiently interesting ways to continue to make good movies most of the time. They are frequently dogged on by, say, internet voices who mistake "jaded" for "knowing what the fuck you are talking about" (that's you). The last two are examples of directors with a schtick who have mastered the art of beating a dead horse, and are rightly perceived as such even by many simpletons. Tarantino sort of bridges the middle ground between them. If you can't see the difference between Verhoeven at his best and category #2, then the taste divide here is too vast to be bridged. I'm glad you have plenty of friends who do get movies, though, and I hope you'll continue nodding your head and agreeing with everything they say while furiously trying to get what you just watched. You can't possibly go wrong with that and some googled Latin in your arsenal. Robocop. Total Recall. Starship Troopers. If anything, it's deviating from that essential Verhoeven sci fi grasp that gives you abominations like Showgirls, and more mixed offerings like The Black Book. It's to be hoped his repeated forays into historical noir and conventional Hollywood suspense aren't all that's coming in the age of CGI futures that has apparently made him obsolete at the box office as a sci fi director.
