Re: "Armor" was the 2nd worst sci-fi book I've ever read

Buying Snow Crash is a lot like paying to see Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers. You're actually purchasing some form of media created by someone who completely fucking hates what you like. I still don't see why cyberpunk readers adore Neal Stephenson for basically writing a book that implied what they enjoyed was a joke.
Let's not get carried away here. Stephenson is NOT saying that, nor does he/did he hate cyberpunk. Unless you've got a link of him SAYING that to somebody, which I doubt. By 1995, cyberpunk was a creaking, almost dead genre since it was all about a future that was quickly becoming the real world's present (minus the apocalypse that everyone in the 80s thought was sure to happen). I think he had a lot of humorous twists and (as I explained to El Koba the last time he spazzed out about it), some tongue-in-cheek hero stuff. But it's clear that the humor came from an appreciation of the genre. Anyone read The Forever War? Anyone other than me think it was pretty good? Speaking of power armor and stuff, I mean.
