Re: I said it was fucking retarded to say System Shock 2 was better than bioshoc

TOP TEN REASONS WHY MORROWIND IS BETTER THAN OBLIVION 10. Ancestral temples. These are so cool! Why aren't they in Oblivion?! 9. Volcanic geography. Not available in any other game. 8. Has underwater. 7. Instead of ruined forts and ruined alien elf forts, has tombs and eeeevil demon temple ruins. 6. Everyone hates you in Morrowind. You can pick whether you get sneered at for your existence or just for being from out of town, but nobody is going to lick your taint even if you save their whole planet. This is refreshing. In Oblivion there's a lot of "Hello stranger! Would you care to impregnate my children? Here is a free cake!" 5. Morrowind: the nation of 24-hour shopping convenience. Oooh it's not realistic to shop at 2 in the morning! Fight realistic pony devils all night while you wait for the store to fucking open so you can ditch your loot! 4. You're guaranteed to be able to kill a mudcrab in Morrowind. 3. Ring Of Machine Gun: not really possible in Oblivion. 2. Flying: not really possible in Oblivion. 1. You can break into God's house and kill him.
How motivated are you to expand this into something I can post to the front page?
Would the article take the form of you posting ignorant comments and me correcting you with mild yet blinding genius? We're gonna be halfway there in a minute!
The only thing I would argue with is:
5. Morrowind: the nation of 24-hour shopping convenience.
YEAH BUT, the Morrowind shopkeepers watch over their wares like they are cemented speds. You couldn't play a burglar in Morrowind because you could never do the whole, "break into a shop keeper's place in the middle of the night and clean them out" thing.
You can't clean them out in Oblivion either. Although the shopkeepers go to sleep, all store goods and money are kept in Sekret Hidden Chests - you have to turn clipping off to get to the bootle. You can take all the shopkeeper's painstakingly-arranged Novice Alembics and 10-drake copies of Thief Of Virtue - a really fat decorator can set you up with 200... even 300!... drakes. The only reason to break in to any shop is to spell out "You Steal From Your Customers" in tongs and calipers on the floor in the night, although this has no effect on business, and random wanderings of the (apparently illiterate) peasantry will ruin your hard work instantly. Thanks, Havoc & Radiant! I was PARTICULARLY pissed that lanterns don't exist in Oblivion. One of my little delights in Morrowind was stealing or buying all the lanterns and candles I could find and taking them back to my place in Balmora (Balmora House Mod? It failed to be OP, though I never used the fourth floor.) Anyway I ringed my roof and balcony railing and stairs with lights; at night it looked like a cheesy Italian restaurant. Then I did the gates of Caldera and Vivec's place. There's an Oblivion lantern mod but it's a little gay; all the lights are crystal balls, and most of them are bright and unsubtle. Also, as Oblivion clips light effects poorly (that's why you see shadows on the ceiling of the dudes upstairs) - anyway I am waxing off here. The point is, I stole the shit out of everything in Morrowind.
I thought you said you played through it as a healer, but did you also spend time as a fighter? If you did do a thief class playthrough, I am curious as to how you enjoyed it, compared to other classes. I had to eventually install a bodyguard mod for Morrowind, as the cliff racers kept killing my rogue.
There's only one class in Bethesda games: fighterthiefwizard. I potter about the swamp masquerading as a herb-mixing healer, but actually I kill the shit out of everything that moves. Except I had to install the Peaceful Creatures mod so that every rat with a chip on its shoulder would stop committing suicide. Incidentally this would also help with your cliff racer problem. Another thing that would have made cliff racers less annoying: a weapon with a strong enchantment on it. As these regenerate in Morrowind (they don't in Oblivion), you would have probably enjoyed your stay in the foyadas a little more if you'd plunked down the coin for sko +50 Shock Damage enchanted dagger. Call it "Cliff Shredda"! My secret pleasure is assassination, so I totally Morag Tonged the shit out of every character I ever played in Morrowind. This leads me to the only marked gameplay improvement in Oblivion: I can poison my weapon. It is total bullshit that I can't pour the same poison down a sleeping dude's throat. You can also capture human souls in soulgems if you're willing to work for it, but it's more an RP thing than a valid gameplay goal.
I argued on the side of Daggerfall once in this forum (I can't remember if SB deleted it or not) when compared to Morrowind, but I no longer feel as strongly as I once did. I am prepared to hear more arguments as to why Morrowind is better than Oblivion when the auto-leveling is taken off.
More arguments as to why Morrowind is better than Oblivion: 10. You can steal everything from a store. Everything. You can steal the shirt off a guy's back. 9. Velothi architecture. It is cool. It does not draw on Fantasy Bullshit That You've Seen A Thousand Times Before. Also, mushroom castles! 8. House Telvanni doesn't give a shit about your laws, puny conquerors! It's great to have a Fuck You faction in a game with lots of factions: a racist, classist, magicka-ist faction that thrives on backstabbing and screwing over the Imperials. 7. Did I already mention racism in general? Because Morrowind is one of the only games in the universe to so successfully and completely integrate genuine racism as part of its gameplay. Oblivion lives in a very sexless and sterile place politically. 6. Aboriginals and their clattering wood chimes. You could never really get in good with these guys; sure you could find their missing Dream Ponies or whatever and they would give you The Offical Badge Of Whitey Is Okay, but you could never join their society or hang with them. They could have been fleshed out a bit more, but there's a total absence of Indigenous Anything in Oblivion. It makes Cyrodil seem like a much younger place than Vvardenfell - a young world with ruins, something like the fantasy of creationists. 5. Dwemer shit. At least you could cruise around and engage with the ruins and ghosts and whatnot! In Oblivion these cats are the primary suppliers of giant hammers and heavy arrows, but you can't find a single trace of them otherwise. 4. In Morrowind, there is no Cloud Ruler Temple. 3. In Morrowind, when you shoot a guy full of arrows from the shadows, the dude doesn't magically see you. In Oblivion anyone you damage can see you, even if you've got 125% chameleon gear on and super-buff sneak. The Unofficial Oblivion patch fixes this to an extent, but still. 2. In Morrowind, The Fighters Guild is where you go if you want to beat shit up for money. In Oblivion, The Fighters Guild is where you go if you want all the responsibilities of a landed knight without any of the money. Or land. 1. Magical Retroactive Thieves Guild Castle. And you still can't order anyone around!
