Re: KITTY!

everyone in the family played video games. We had computers my whole life and mom liked girl games (puzzles, rpgs, King's Quest) and dad liked chess programs, which he played incessantly, and it would get him fired from more than a few jobs too.
Holy shit. I love video games but I've never had that happen to me. There was no alt-tab back then either, so I guess when you got caught playing Battlechess at work the game stayed there as your boss at first tried to ignore it but then couldn't as the queen continued to shake her ass. Actually, that reminds me: I learned absolutely nothing about real chess from Battlechess because I'd "develop" my queen as soon as possible, since even EGA Queen was so GOD DAMN hot. I would have her out, killing off the computer's side and then intentionally let one of the computer's pawns get her because the animation where she loses her powers to the worst piece on the board is so humiliating. I don't know if we can still be friends after writing this, but I am assuming that by including "Juno First" into a game list I have bored off 90% of the audience.
Mom and Bro used to play Tetris - right when it first came out for PC, like what the fuck was that, 88? I was cool, man, back in the day, so it was only a source of mild frustration that I couldn't crack the Mom/Bro dominated top ten. Then one day I got 6th! Out of the blue, motherfucker! I was so happy about it, I think we even went out to dinner that night to celebrate my intiation into the cult of the high score board.
I think we had the "Spectrum Holobyte" release of Tetris, which used about 40% of the screen for the game. The rest of the background area depicted over-idealized scenes from what it's like to live in Russia. The backgrounds would rotate and I remember that one depicted some Russians in space. It would have been great if, as the game progressed and the scenes rotated back around, if every time the space scene came up another cosmonaut was missing from the picture. All right, it wouldn't have been that great, but there is no version of Tetris I know of for the 800 and I have no other place to put that. Do you find you still enjoy Tetris, Zseni? I like having it around on various systems and platforms, but I don't know how much time I spend actually playing it. ICJ
