The Brady guide is very incomplete and often wrong.
Nevertheless, some guide is absolutely necessary if only for the hunts and the FUCKING LOOT system, which especially blows. The extra maps at Gamefaqs alone are worth a look for powerlevelling, as is the FAQ specifically designed for that purpose. It totally turns the main plot on its head, but most of those enemies are pussies compared to the hunts and a vacation in the Necrohol anyway. The Zodiac spear in particular is a gay, gay, gay trick to play on people, and was exactly the kind of thing that always soured me on older RPG's. When I organize the party above, just picture either Balthier or Basch with the spear, and you'll understand my extraordinarily simple approach. As far as the katana was concerned, I went balls to the wall with Genji equipment and the Masamune, only to find that I was unable to get much of an impressive combo rating consistently. I also attempted the cat ear hood with awesome but still not combo results. I ended up sticking with swords and shields much of the time for other than tank characters, with the occasional Measure and shield combo for dealing with undead hordes (I learned that the hard way in the Henna mines part 2). It's purely academic at this point, but I'm still blown away at what an effective timesink the combat mechanic turned into. It may well be targeted at WOWtards, I wouldn't know since I don't play mmorpgs on principle. But it is a phenomenal numbers game that clearly outmatches the predecessors I've played. I can't imagine how I failed to properly warn off FABIO that unlike many of his previous problems with great games, his objections to this one would well founded and immediately apparent. It's the PS2 triumph of the math masochism simulator, and that either does it for you or doesn't.
