FALLOUT: TICTACS was awful.
The clumsy fusion of real-time and turn-based combat worked about as well in Tactics as it did in Arcanum. Real-time was like Command & Conquer played with only six units, while turn-based was nothing more than an afterthought (for example, instead of the enemy interrupting your turn with a turn of its own, it would just start shooting at you while you were trying to move). All the maps were straight out of Desktop Tower Defense, with one long corridor spiraling toward your objective. Commandos did something like this, but that's because the maps in Commandos only existed to spoon-feed the player puzzles in the form of Nazi patrols. All the enemies in Tactics were evidently just sprinkled around randomly - one map was nothing but room after room of ATV-sized cockroaches to be smashed, with a tank-sized cockroach at the end (PROTIP: he can't fit through the only door into his lair). There were all kinds of skills but none of them mattered except the shooty ones, although sneak and steal were good too if you didn't mind saving and reloading all the time. The designers admitted that half the game art had been designed for a different project that no publisher wanted. There's lots of humour in the situations and dialogue but it's all of the Australian variety (see Yahoo Serious, Quentin Beck). The patch fixed most of the crash bugs (like the crash on save bug and the crash on mission complete bug) but didn't even make a dent in the rest. My favorite is the M2 bug - shoot at someone with a burst from your Browning machinegun and he might or might not get hit, but everyone else in the cone of fire will be automatically struck regardless. There are so many ways to break the game that I can only describe threading your little men through the mazes as Cannon Fodder crossed with Irritating Stick. Lots of people will tell you that Tactics wasn't a good sequel to Fallout but was still an okay game, albeit not nearly as good as X-Com, Jagged Alliance or any other squad-based game they can think of. Those people are, sadly, retarded :(
