Re: Is ebay the best place for Model M keyboards?
Back when the company I work for was just a small startup (mid to late 1990's), the technical team used to take lunch everyday at a cheap Mexican restaurant, after which we would go to the thrift store next door and see what computer equipment had been donated. There was a university in this town, and one day we found that they had donated an entire rolling bin of IBM model M keyboards, a mix of brand-new and used. In true clueless thrift store fashion, each keyboard, whether new or used, was priced at $.50. There were over a hundred total keyboards in the bin, of which roughly 40% were new and 60% were used. One of the founders of the company pulled a $50 out of his wallet and offered it to the cashier for the entire lot. The offer was accepted, and we loaded them into the three cars we had driven there and took them back to the office. For the next few years, any computer built for a new employee had one of those keyboards attached to it. I've still got the original one I took and now use for my home computer, plus a new replacement that I hoarded. Sometime around 2001, we were bought out by a big company, and apparently (I transferred out of state right after the buyout) the new owners ordered the remaining 75+ keyboards to be thrown in the dumpster in the parking lot. :(
