Re: FFXII is pretty good...

But I think what you really want is Auto Assult. It's kind of not at all gay.
This game has gotten universally horrible to meh reviews. Haven't heard a single positive thing about it. Also, it is an MMORPG that no one is playing.
You could also pick up Chrono Cross for PS1 - green label copies are very cheap, so it's a nice throwaway choice. Get ready for some GIANT GIANT pixels. The battle system in Chrono Cross is one of Square's worthier efforts, and you get access to a giant pile of playable teammates including slutty scientists and kawaii martians and androgynous rock stars. If you found Chrono Trigger impenetrably faggy, the good news is that Chrono Cross is impenetrably faggy in a completely different way. A lot of people really hated CC for not being a proper sequel to CT.
CC's combat seemed fun until you realized there really wasn't much to it; the enemies would randomly attack and break up your movies with no way to determine when it'd happen which kind of defeated any strategy. There are no characters. You go around collecting 70+ pokemon in character's clothing. Zero character development and the main character is a mute which stopped being charming around the mid 90s. Replaces all the cool original shit in CT with boring crap. Want to fly around in a time machine? HAVE FUN WITH YOUR CANOE! Worst ending ever.
I'm hesitant to recommend Disgaea/Phantom Brave just because they have ONLY one thing going on it them, and if you hate that thing, you're fucked. But they're fun at first. Depending on your ability to handle games which have almost nothing to do with playing, and quite a lot to do with trading and collecting and economics, you could check out the Atelier series.
The humor, while very good, is really the only reason to play it unless you're an obsessive collector and powerleveller.
If you're committed to choking down a Final Fantasy game, 12 and 9 are best bets. I know everyone is all BUT 7 IS THE ULTIMATE except I found 7 totally unplayable. 9 is very soothing.
9 started off promising by being the first FF in six years to not have a brooding emo protagonist, then took the typical Jap RPG route of introducing more and more plot threads until it collapsed into a directionless mess. The game that swore everyone off the active time battle system once and for all.
