Re: DMC3:SE, Civ 4

The other thing (probably the biggest thing) is how blatantly and cheerfully lowbrow the whole game is. I suspect the professional video game reviewer spends an inordinate amount of time explaining to friends and family that what he does is indeed a "real job." They want to be able to point out that video games are a legitimate art form with subtle nuances to be appreciated. They want substance over style. They don't want to be caught enjoying a game whose theme song includes the words, "Dragon Kick your ass into the Milky Way! *chorus* Milky Way!"
How do you explain the love for Viewtiful Joe then? The two most common professional reviewer complaints I see for God Hand are "it's not Okami" and "it's not Viewtiful Joe". VJ was a cel shading masturbation session with paper thin mechanics.
Well I'm not saying the games they want are truly that deep. Isn't Kohan just Dawn of War with ass graphics and supply lines? But it sounds freakin' deep, and that just might be enough to get your big brother to stop rolling his eyes when you talk about work. God Hand's combat is so nuanced I keep finding new things to do all the time. But try explaining the tactical importance of kicking a guy in the nuts -complete with "ding!" sound effects and a laugh track- to your parents. Viewtiful Joe looks really impressive to someone who isn't that familiar with cell shading, plus you can always fall back on "you have to understand japanese culture to get it."

God Hand is awesome, my one complaint is that the battle mechanics change when you reach level Die.
How so?
The basic enemies stop launching on demand. They become as stable as the tall ones.
