What you need in the backcountry is a detailed topographical map, showing elevation, bodies of water, and landmarks, including dwellings. High-res topo maps are <a href="http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/topo24knp.jsp">available</a> for handhelds, but coverage is not universal. At any rate, he may have been so surrounded by trees and cliffs that his GPS would have failed to get a fix in the first place.
