Need for Speed [implied colon] Underground
Ridge Racer is about overtaking the competition, one car at a time. Gran Turismo is about tracing fine lines across complex corners, with an eye to exit speed. Underground is about strapping springs to your ass and bouncing around a dripping wet neon-lit field of cocks. Your only goal is to not get fucked. What's over this next rise? You'd better hope to God it's not the yellow taxi or the grey van or the blue sedan, because you won't be able to avoid it. The closest you'll come to participating in Underground is choosing to stay in the left lane because the last yellow taxi or grey van or blue sedan was in the left lane and lightning never strikes twice, right? This is most evident in the drag races, where you live your life seventeen tries at the same quarter mile at a time. Steering is locked in this mode, leaving you free to concentrate on memorizing the right pattern of lane-changes to avoid a collision (think Killer7 with turn signals). "Crashes" suck because even though you can stick all kinds of wings and shit on your car, none of it ever comes off when you slam into a concrete divider. Points are awarded for near misses and stylish maneuvers, but points are useless - you can't boost with them and you can't spend them in shops. There are no pedestrians and the flag girls are all unattractive skanks. One of them wears a stupid hat. If you really like a particular auto-part manufacturer then it's quite possible that some of the decals in Underground may delight you. If you still need convincing, here's a minor spoiler from the first few minutes of play: Sparco.
