Re: We rented it and I've been playing it for a few hours.
PS: a good way to see if an enemy is too strong (before you get whatever spell tells you the enemy's full details and powwa) is to send your other party member out to hit them first. If they die or almost die in one hit, just leave them behind and start running. 8( Of course the first several hours are mostly you solo. :( Although the very very beginning is like a prelude scene where you are essentially someone else's party member, so you're following a leader, along with like 5 other friendly soldiers, fighting through a castle area and cleaning up. Another cool thing: you buy "cure" at a store, and once it's bought, every party member can use it as long as they get the license (which you get by spending license points, which are like talent points or stat points or whatever). Then you can cure yourself after a battle, and your MP regenerates automatically (MMO style O_O). So basically you can do plain straight up grinding all you want. Or just move through the game and screw grinding, just do normal fights. Without random encounters and loading up battle screens and shit, it moves faster than the previous FF games, and faster than like every MMO ever of course. Apparently the total play time will amount to about the same as the previous FF games, so you're not going to be stuck fighting a million monsters just to try to get to a point where you can progress.
