HELP!
I know everybody here hates quarter to three, probably because of that one guy who always complains about games that take two hands to play because one of his arms is shriveled. Anyway, I'm desperate, and I know somebody here has some good advice, so I'm reposting something I just posted on q23: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm an idiot, so it was pretty easy to convince myself that I should build a new computer this weekend even though I'm an idiot. Went to Fry's, bought a gigabyte 965p-ds3 motherboard, an intel core duo 6600 cpu, 2 sticks of corsair ddr2-667 1 gb ram, and a radeon x1900xt video card. The problem I'm having is that I can't power it up at all. The fan on the (sturdy 550 watt) power supply doesn't move when I turn it on. There's no sound at all. I grabbed a power supply tester from work, and the power supply itself appears to be fine (though the -5v light doesn't light up - problem?) I've tried pulling the motherboard out of the case, hooking up only the power supply, the video card, 1 stick of ram. Still no power at all. I tried swapping the memory sticks and moving them to different slots. No go. I even tried everything on a different MB I picked up this morning (gonna return it later). No go. Per some instructions I found, I've been "shorting" the MB's power connector every time I test it. I took "shorting" to mean that I'd touch both the metal posts with the tip of a screwdriver or a knife. Does this mean the cpu is hosed? Am I missing something else? Again - no power at all.
