Re: I have given this some thought!

For a while, I considered making an oink-torrent named "all good music, ever," a sort of Ratio Death Star. I think your estimate is a little low, but close to the right answer. Bear in mind that the normal unit of downloaded music is one album, so you're bound to get stuck with SOME dud tracks unless you go cull them out. I also assumed the percentage of released music which is good remains constant, and that each iteration of technology doubles the number of releases.
The reason that your numbers are a little high is that you are willing to download a bunch of shitty tracks to get the one good song off an album. If there are more than 3 bad songs on an album, then in my opinion the album itself is not worth hearing, and I "download never" the tracks that suck. That would probably cut your estimate by half, if not by more than half. The problem, of course, is knowing which tracks to cull out, if you're not familiar with the artist. I circumnavigate that problem by only downloading albums that I suspect I'm going to like... I imagine that you're probably downloading entire albums from artists you've never heard, which I guess I wouldn't do. There isn't any point in having a hard drive full of music that you never intend to listen to; I already have a box full of music I don't want to hear, it's called a radio.
