Re: mrs. johnson and Choson

The irony is that I've used soulseek exactly three times this year and kind of think it sucks now. Oink is currently my main music destination, but it helps that I don't have to worry about dumb ratio ideas and I don't attempt to post on forums that are stupid (or in general). I also disagree with Ray's belief that the multi-album torrents edict is bad, even while I got my giant ratio from seeding those, but that may be due to a difference between our downloading styles. For all the "complete" discographies I got from Oink, I probably could have gotten the same effect by doing some research and just downloading a few key albums. But of course, Ray's nuclear fallout-resistant RAID-6 setup versus my Maxtor hard drive in a $15 enclosure is a good indication of the difference in our collecting habits.
There are some things I got that I could not - and indeed would not - have gotten without Giant Torrent Love. Like the 5 GB Ayumi Hamasaki album/single torrent that lived on theppn, or the Ronnie James Dio discog at Demonoid, or things like the 15-CD History Of House Music. But the discogs I'm looking for? Hey, Demonoid probably has them now. Or Pirate Bay does. My bread and butter is the arcane, elderly, and international at this point, however, and I don't know what they're pitching up on Oink these days but I'm guessing things like the two Ennio Morricone/Chico Buarque albums are not among the current selections, and neither are Hungarian prog, Amr Diab mashups, or Gae Bolg. But those things DO live on Soulseek and I am happy to run into them all accidentally and spuriously. I also like how Soulseek is good about humoring my "let me see a bunch of stuff similar to this" browsing habits by neatly organizing groups of albums and songs by "personalities". Also good: impulsive song grabs. Like when I HAD to have SOS Band's "Do It Now (Do It Right)" - it was maybe 15 minutes from inception of crazy desire to acquisition of desired item, including boot-up time.
