Re: MAME advice

So to celebrate my new full time job that destroyed my June, I've decided to dedicate July to building a MAME cabinet. This is a big deal, as people may remember that I'm terrible with my hands. So "cabinet" is going to be a loose guideline, instead of a blueprint. The victory condition is merely getting solid arcade controls going, so if my cabinet ends up being a sheet of plywood and many wires streaming out of my computer to the Happ controls, I'm fine with that.
I am trying the same thing, with imperfect results. I wanted to build a little box before tackling an entire cabinet. Here's my progress so far: <img src="http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/7697/controlpanel7by.jpg"> The knobby thing in black is a spinner. There's an IPAC-2 keyboard inside the box, from Ultimarc. I actually got a problematic one: it only registers about 3 out of ever 5 clicks, be it clicks from buttons or the microswitched Happ Super. This happened to a few people recently, and my braying like a hyena paid off: the very nice, very responsible owner of Ultimarc shipped out fixed chips last week. I should get mine tomorrow.
Much of my 1.5 Gigs of ROMs that (mostly) worked in MAME32 0.36 are now of course broken in MAME32 0.62 (don't ask me how I got this version yesterday) and MAME32 1.06. Stuart's warnings aside, I was more surprised by how many of my ROMs were now reported as incomplete. They were complete in 1999, but they're incomplete in 2006. I don't know how that can possibly occur, but if I load MAME32 0.36 I get to play seemingly perfect Double Dragon and 1943, but in later versions I can't. Audits (rounded):
This is a mess and a real problem - I have a large number of ROMs from MAME .61 (which you are welcome to), but it's not complete. The big boys are mostly there, but every once in a while I'll notice that something is missing, like Popeye or what have you. Very frustrating. I have "Homo" but not Ikari Warriors. The problem with the 13 gig pile from the latest version is you have no idea what perfectly working game those cocksuckers derezzed for no obvious reason. Well, that and it's thirteen goddamn gigs. All it takes is one dev to say that the knocker isn't emulated correctly in Q*bert and they will take away your Q*bert. They used to maintain an easy-to-follow WHATSNEW.TXT doc, but if I remember correctly that file has fallen by the wayside in recent years.
Is there a good site where everyone downloads individual ROMs? I'm thinking this might be better for me as I don't need 50 versions of Mahjong.
The only thing that has helped me is typing the exact filename into Google and going from there. I was missing smashtv.zip from MAME .61 and managed to grab a copy with a search. There used to be sites that offers individual ROMs in an easy-to-obtain manner but if they are still out there I don't know about them. the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!
