MAME advice
Are there any MAME experts here, among the 7 readers? I've got questions. So to celebrate my new full time job that destroyed my June, I've decided to dedicate July to building a MAME cabinet. This is a big deal, as people may remember that I'm terrible with my hands. So "cabinet" is going to be a loose guideline, instead of a blueprint. The victory condition is merely getting solid arcade controls going, so if my cabinet ends up being a sheet of plywood and many wires streaming out of my computer to the Happ controls, I'm fine with that. However, during my preliminary research I've also discovered that I'm not very good with my head either. MY COCK HEAD! Haha, no, I mean my neck head. After taking 7 years off from the MAME scene, I find the world to be annoying, as Stuart describes. Much of my 1.5 Gigs of ROMs that (mostly) worked in MAME32 0.36 are now of course broken in MAME32 0.62 (don't ask me how I got this version yesterday) and MAME32 1.06. Stuart's warnings aside, I was more surprised by how many of my ROMs were now reported as incomplete. They were complete in 1999, but they're incomplete in 2006. I don't know how that can possibly occur, but if I load MAME32 0.36 I get to play seemingly perfect Double Dragon and 1943, but in later versions I can't. Audits (rounded): MAME 0.36 1600 correct 1850 total MAME 1.06 1200 correct 2000 incorrect ...and no, I don't know why I have different totals either. This is complicated by the fact that MAME32 1.06 will sometimes let me play "incomplete" ROMs. So fuck all that, let's start fresh. I notice that people release MAME ROM torrents in conjuction with MAME updates, and obviously I'm not going to try and "patch" my ROMs through 50 revisions. Should I really invest in one of these 13 Gig collections? Is there a good site where everyone downloads individual ROMs? I'm thinking this might be better for me as I don't need 50 versions of Mahjong.
