Depends...
For: DMC1 was kickass enough to give birth to an entire action game subgenre. DMC1 has a cooler looking setting and more polished menus. DMC1's bosses have more personality and are much more satisfying to finally kill. The boss "nightmare" is one of the most creative boss designs of all time. DMC3 is chock full of references to #1 and is a touch more fun if you tried #1. In DMC1 the final boss is satan. DMC1 is considerably less meta-gay. DMC1 is probably $5 or less today. DMC1 will fill your dark soul with LIGHT!!! Against: DMC1's beginning enemies are puppets. Why are the japanese so scared of puppets? The combo system is obtuse, unforgiving, and not at all something to get creative with if you want high ratings. The controls are not remappable and the default controls' thumb-centric layout can get painful. DMC1's difficulty is comparable to the Original American release of DMC3, so it's not for the fainthearted, in case you're a pussy. The camera angles still betray the game's original design as a Resident Evil game (before #4) and can really be awful in some fights. DMC1 will fill your dark soul with LIGHT!!! I have both and I still enjoy DMC1 every now and then. Unless your time is at an absolute premium I think $5 for DMC1 is a can't lose situation. However, DMC3, aside from ugly-ass menus and less-impressive-looking devil triggers, is a complete improvement over #1.
