Re: You probably watched only shitty movies (like Hostel)

I hope by "this year" you mean 2006, because it was definitely the worst "serious" movie of 2005.
Well, I was referring everything I've seen since...October I guess. I liked Syriana but not as much, I put Jarhead in another category altogether, and the others were nowhere near it. Mind you, I was only counting big screen releases.
Remember in the 70s and early 80s, people couldn't praise Spielberg's "childlike sense of wonder" enough? Well, the reason he has that sense of wonder is because he IS childlike. These days, when he makes movies, it's as if a child decided he wanted to make a grown-up movie, and figures if he watches grown-up movies and emulates them, well then he'll be in the club. It would be facile to say he doesn't care about his source material anymore (a movie about a guy stuck in an airport?), but I think the truer statement is that he doesn't understand it. He's sure there's an emotional resonance somewhere in there, but simply throwing the events up on the screen isn't going to do it, Steve.
I think this is the first Spielberg movie I've actually liked, for precisely the problems you list first. I don't think most of those criticisms apply that well to this film, which seemed unusually mature for the director. Yeah, the sex-guilt thing was a terrible way to end it, and it was definitely too long, but apart from the female hitman there wasn't much I didn't enjoy about it. I know it's very fashionable to focus entirely on the director and director-related criticisms, but I was pretty comfortable with the movie throughout.
