Serenity is GOOD
I'm pretty late to the party on this one. I didn't watch Serenity in theatres because I didn't watch the Firefly TV show because I'm not a Joss Whedon fan because I'm not a total fucking nerd. Just kidding, of course I'm a total fucking nerd BUT I didn't watch Firefly because it looked like Star Trek or Babylon 5. I think this prejudice was partially correct...
Shindig - Airdate: November 1, 2002 There’s trouble ahead for Mal after he gets into a dust-up with one of Inara’s less-than-noble clients. Mal makes a social faux pas while attending a fancy ball, and ends up challenging Inara's date, Atherton Wing, to a duel. It would be pretty manly, except that Inara now has to teach Mal how to use a sword. The rest of the Serenity crew would probably enjoy laughing at his predicament, but they are being held hostage by the ruthless crimelord Badger, who has his eye on Serenity.
...but the great news is that the movie Serenity is actually Star Wars. We start off meeting Han Solo, space pirate, in his bucket-of-bolts space heap. They're protecting Obi Wan Simon, and his ward, Princess Leia, but they're doing it for the mutual benefit, not because the pirates care about the cause (but deep down we know these are good guys, which is proven once Uncle Owen's farm is destroyed by the Empire and they can no longer hide). Caught between the Empire and Tuskan Raiders, our ragtag rebels have to make some tough choices and accept their destinies. It may sound like I'm down on this, but I'm not, because I love Star Wars (unlike George Lucas). Besides, we all know that Star Wars is just The Hidden Fortress anyway, right? (Psh). A couple of plot holes keep Serenity from being really great, but I liked it so much I hope for a sequel, and will settle for a prequel: downloading episodes of Firefly.
