Additionally, since he played for Buffalo in the 70s and 80s and Buffalo has a terrible coach in Mularkey, they are seriously looking at him, too. But here's the thing: the Worst Owner in Pro Sports (Tom Benson, a.k.a. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tom_Benson&oldid=25871018">the Devil</a>) is going to make any coach who goes in there look bad. Ditka was easily distracted, but he should have put together better seasons than 6-10, 6-10 and 3-13. But he had a cheapskate owner pulling the strings to make us trade out of the #2 spot in the 1996 draft when Walter Jones was sitting there in order to grab Chris Freaking Naeole at #10. The hurricane was a distraction for Haslett, but in a different way than you might expect: Benson wants the team in San Antonio, so he has not let them use their pristine practice facility in Louisiana that was just built. He's the piece of human garbage that's telling the players to renew their leases in San Antonio while the league is telling the players that they WILL be in New Orleans next year. The Saints are the only team besides the Texans who haven't been in a conference championship game. Ever. They have had 18 seasons where they had five victories or less. They took a (bad) kicker in the first round after going .500 the first time in franchise history and therefore followed it up with a 1-15 campaign because they needed defensive help. They got involved in the Steve Walsh - Troy Aikman debate when the Cowboys had 'em both and threw down a host of picks for a complete bust. They traded an entire draft for one guy because the coach got drunk a week before and was in earshot of a micrphone, accidently opening negotiations against himself. They traded a first round pick for Richard Todd (at the end of his career), Earl Campbell (at the end of his career) and ... <i>information about all the available collegiate players.</i> The traded the first ever pick in franchise history for fucking notes on all the other players in the draft! They wound up in a division with HoFers or near HoFers in Montana, Rice, Craig, Young, Taylor and Lott even though they are about as far away geographically as they could possibly get from San Francisco, they played the first Giants home game after 9/11 in the only NFL game I've ever seen that was obviously fixed, they got displaced by a hurricane four years later and added new meaning to the definition of "home job" by having to start their season in that fucking shithole, they had a Jets played put their quarterback in the camel clutch in 2002 and have that incident be completely forgotten as our tackle (Turley) stepped in to defend his QB and get that piece of shit Damien Robinson off him -- Robinson was never fined or punished for breaking out a wrestling move in game -- ... ... They traded William Roaf for a third round pick, they traded Chuck Muncie and Wes Chandler for nothing, they took George Rogers over Lawrence Taylor, they took Jonathan Sullivan over Marcus Trufant, they took Alex Molden over Eddie George, they did all these things even though they had a need at the better player's position and the better player was outstanding and highly regarded in college. They actually got a touchdown with :07 seconds left down by seven points by throwing the ball around from one guy to the next and then lost the game because the kicker missed the following extra point. They have had misfortune, they have made unbelievably dumb mistakes that were all their own, they have been on the losing end of fixed games, they've seen the officials give a kicker as many chances for a game winner as it was going to take, they've seen their own fans fucking penalized in a pre-season game for cheering too loudly. They sold our 34 straight games of sub .500 football before the hurricane and then seen said fans be described as "disinterested, disloyal and not passionate," they have had the two worst human beings in business own their team, one right after another and when things finally looked good in the late-80s because Rozelle told the Devil to hire GM Jim Finks, Finks had a heart attack and fucking died after somehow getting this team to the playoffs four times. And now, after all these years, after putting up with all this horseshit, Benson's going to take the fucking team away and wipe out the franchise.
