In our design for engineers class in college, the prof was an old test pilot who'd lost tons of friends due to bad design, bad user interfaces, bad engineering, etc. It wasn't terribly uncommon for him to get choked up and broken-voiced over a particularly nasty design flaw that we were discussing in class that day because he'd had someone close to him die of it.
