PHOTOS Part 3: LA REVOLUCION!
Back in new Havana, we set off to visit the "Plaza de la Revolucion". Revolution Plaza, yo. Coming from Canada, a revolution is fun and exotic in my mind. Canadians don't revolt, and we certainly wouldn't celebrate it. Canadians once helped burned down the White House during the War of 1812, and we still kinda feel bad about it. I hailed a taxi from the street, which is advised against, but I was sure to check for the blue license plate, which means the car is state-owned. The taxi stopped and I lean in the back door and ask the driver "how much to the Plaza de la Revolucion?" and he says $10, which is about $8 too much. I clarify "The Plaza de la Revolucion?" and now he says "Central Plaza?" My confused look must have scared him, because he then pointed to my hand, which was propping me up on his backseat as I leaned in. He said a bunch of angry Spanish, and we parted ways. The Plaza de la Revolucion is basically a parking lot! In the distance you can see iron Che adorning the Ministry of the Interior building. More soldiers there. :( Vamos bien! It's going well! So don't fucking complain. (also note the majesty of this corner of Revolution Plaza) Two soldiers and four Ladas. This is as close as I could get to a soldier with my camera drawn. I always assume I'm breaking a law, and I'd guess that crimes against the peoples carry huge prison terms. This billboard commemorates Cuba's defeat over the fascists. Have YOU ever defeated some fascists, America? Oh yeah, nevermind. See the 23 painted on the cement block? That's the street number. Following maps was difficult for a couple of days before realizing that we have to look down instead of up. Food in Cuba is terrible. The national dish is rice and beans. Rice and beans! The high end version of that is rice and black beans, and don't get fooled by a salad option. Salads are always just a couple of cold vegetable slices on the side of your plate, and sometimes those veggies arrive in cube form, straight from the freezer. Speaking of cubes, the yellow chunks in the above picture are cheese! Take that, Bush. There is no advertising in Cuba, which is very refreshing and fun for a while, but they really need to ease up on the Che already. A cloud so tall it touched heaven. Offering a lizard some gin and tonic. WHA?!?!
