speaker + mics

Hey well when you buy one TAFKAM, keep a few things in mind. Well just this: If you're just throwing down for the mic itself, no problem. But, if you feel all gay you can buy a headphone/mic combo from whatever scumsucking electronics store you choose and pay anywhere from 15 to 100 bucks (Amazon has some decent ones for 20), as usual. But! Remember the headphone/mic combo will probably need to plug into both your headphones jack and your mic jack. I only mention this because my computer desk is arranged so that my tower nests in its own shelf directly in front of me, below the monitor (it's some crazy Office Depot/O'Sullivan thang and sort of looks like this), far enough away so I can't really lean back in my chair and have the 'phones reach all the way. And if you have a speaker set with a phone jack wherever, you'll have to account for that, too. My SB 7.1 set has a seperate volume control piece cabled off the subwoofer, and it has a phone jack on it. So, I had to run the fucking thing back near the back of my tower until I bought a cable extension from Radio Shack. The more you know!
Odd - I have the SB 7.1's too - Why would you want headphones when I'm assuming you have the 7.1's hooked to an Audigy (or in my case, Audigy2 ZS)? I wouldn't trade the surround-sound for headphones. Ideally the mic I'm looking for would be some sort of head-mounted deal but I want to hear everyone else normally over the speakers. Here is my current setup: Shouldn't have any cabling or other issues as my gaming rig sits beside the desk in the open (better to exhaust the heat anyway). I'm going to check newegg for a wireless... Shit. Just did and I guess a head-mounted mic without the earpiece doesn't exist. Unless there are objections I think I'll settle on this logitech one. I don't need more clutter but hey - I've had moments in the past couple of days that made me remember why I loved gaming. Doom3, Splinter Cell, etc - I blew through them to see the eye candy and justify my hardware addiction but I'm having a blast with BF2. 1280x1024 fully anti-aliased, blazing through Kabul while jets and attack choppers fly overhead. Sweetness.
Playing with a mic + speakers instead of headphones brings up the problem that everyone you talk to the mic on will hear what's coming over your speakers. If you're in a particularly noisy moment (firefight, driving a vehicle), others will have toruble hearing you.
